The three main goals for MHEME project are as follows:
- Facilitate high quality healthcare for its citizens living or traveling abroad; by making sure their health data can be used at the point of care or pharmacy abroad. As corresponding national eHealth services are already offered and also being deployed at national level each Maltese citizen or resident can potentially benefit from the cross-border exchange of health data.
- Facilitate access to medications prescribed to visiting citizens from other EU Member States, in line with Article 11 of the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive (2011/24/EU). As corresponding national eHealth services through the “Pharmacy of Your Own Choice”(POYC) system are already at pharmacies nationally, each pharmacy has a potential to dispense medications based on an ePrescription. The extension of the national services with the cross-border functionality will enable the dispensation of medications on an ePrescription issued in another EU Member State.
- Deliver high quality healthcare for visiting citizens from other EU Member States. As corresponding national eHealth services are already available at points of care nationally, each healthcare provider has a potential to access health data of such visitors from their home country. Travelers that would seek medical help in Malta would be able to grant the access to the data to health professionals involved in their treatment, which would raise the quality of the treatment.
Under the proposed action, the NCPeH will:
- Ensure stable operations of the deployed MyHealth@EU services
- Implement upgrades to the new versions of MyHealth@EU artefacts adopted yearly by the eHMSEG
- Expand our services to also include the following:
- ePrescription country B – start of operations in early 2026 (Wave 8)
- Launch eP-B and make it available to authorised pharmacists in all pharmacies in Malta and Gozo
