Influenza Virus A(H1N1)Treatment phaseAs from Monday 21st December we have moved to Treatment Phase. This means that all patients who develop influenza like symptoms and who are at higher risk of developing severe or complicated illness will be treated with antivirals immediately without the need of a swab.
Patients not considered to be at higher risk of developing severe or complicated illness and who have uncomplicated illness due to confirmed or strongly suspected influenza virus infection do not need to be treated with antivirals...click here for the full document.

Mitigation phaseMalta has been in Mitigation Phase since 9th July 2009 following one week of Containment phase since the first local case of H1N1 was confirmed on 1st July. Since 09/07/09 swabbing and treatment is offered to all those persons who are at high risk of developing complications from influenza which include persons suffering from chronic disease, children under 5 years of age and pregnant women.
Any person who develops flu like symptoms should contact his doctor ,who will in turn contact the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Unit if the patient falls under the criteria to be swabbed. The Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Unit will arrange for swabbing to be done, and will inform the patient with the result and arrange for treatment if required. Key MessagesYou are advised to contact your family doctor if you have flu like symptoms and suffer from serious underlying health conditions or are pregnant or a child under 5 years of age or whose condition suddenly gets worse and those whose condition is still getting worse after 7 days (5 days for a child).
